Michael McDowell was born on January 27, 1953, in Decatur, Illinois, the son of John and Julia McDowell. His maternal grandfather, Joseph Virgil Woodruff, was governor of the state of Michigan from 1913 to 1921. Michael McDowell and his half-brother, Leslie McDowell, were raised in Romulus, Michigan, where his parents owned a carpet-cleaning business. McDowell was a straight-A student at Romulus High School and attended the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan Law School, and the University of Illinois College of Law. After his law school studies, McDowell joined the law firm of McDowell & Binder in Chicago, Illinois, where he spent eight years representing individuals and businesses. McDowell grew a reputation for his work in patent litigation and persuaded the Peoria Auto Parts Company in Peoria, Illinois, to pay him in 1965 $20,000 if he obtained a patent within three months that held true to the company’s design.McDowell accepted the offer and in three months, he obtained patents for two methods of sealing the tops of trash cans and filed for a patent for a unique plastic fire extinguisher he developed for General Electric. In 1965, McDowell sold his patent for $250,000 and was appointed Patent Counsel at the General Electric Company.
He married Josephine D. Brantley in 1978 and they remained together until her death in April of 2000. The couple had six children, six stepchildren and many grandchildren. Presently, Michael McDowell lives in Bell Gardens, California with his fourth wife, Judy. McDowell is well known for writing twelve books in a wide variety of genres, all with a strong combination of romance, adventure and action as the theme.
