“Inflation is something that could be avoided,” said Sun Lihui, deputy managing director of the Asian Monetary Fund, on Wednesday. “If you look at the amount of money that is printed, that is something to avoid and something to control.”

Taiwan has the world’s highest consumer inflation rate and is considered a big risk by foreign lenders and investors.

Inflation rose to 6.05% last year, the highest rate since the global financial crisis in the fall of 2008, according to the government’s statistics bureau. The inflation rate is expected to rise further this year and it has already risen more than twice since the end of last year.

Sun said the risk of inflation is a major source of concern for the region, which is in the midst of a trade war with the United States.

“It’s not only a concern of local currency exchange and purchasing power of people but it’s a concern that could be aggravated by the trade war,” she said. “To some extent that will affect the rest of the economy. People might be able to afford goods and services but if the price of goods and services is increasing and wages are not rising with it, then that will impact income.”

“It’s important for us to avoid that kind of situation,” Sun said. “I think in some way we have an incentive to see whether inflation can be controlled to be as much as possible.”

Taiwan’s inflation rate increased to 6.05% last year, the highest in the world and higher than the nation’s GDP growth rate of 3.94% and almost double the average of the last 25 years.

The IMF had voiced concerns about Taiwan’s economic prospects at the start of this year, arguing that Taiwan’s government, which has been pushing to increase consumer spending, was having a hard time achieving its economic targets.

“The authorities are not adopting the appropriate measures to deal with underlying issues such as constraints to credit growth,” said the IMF in its World Economic Outlook on January 7
